Why Memorial Day?

Memorial Day was first called Decoration Day and has been commemorated since the Civil War. This national holiday is set aside for us to remember those service men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country of their lives. Many times we overshadow this remembrance with picnics, BBQs and games. As we take part in these activities, we should remember that it is possible because of the freedom we are blessed with in this country, the freedom that is protected by our armed forces everyday. Thank you to the men and women of the United States Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard.

Last summer I was in New York City for two and a half months at an internship. While there I took a day trip to Boston. Then on the way back to Utah, I took the train to Washington D.C. with my dad for a few days with a day trip to Baltimore. On these trips I had the great opportunity to learn more of our country’s young, rich heritage. I gained more appreciation for the freedom we have and for those who have fought for that freedom – the people of Boston who opposed tyranny during the Revolutionary War, the people of Baltimore who proudly defended their city and kept our flag flying in the War of 1812, the many thousands of people who fought brother against brother on our homeland during the Civil War, the men and women who were sent off to Europe, the Pacific and Asia as part of world conflicts and wars.

Please remember the real reason for Memorial Day. Take a minute while you’re out enjoying freedom and remember those who gave their lives so you could have it. Happy Memorial Day and thank you to our service men and women and their families.
