San Francisco Layover

2016-8-14-san-francisco-9-copyMy journey back to Beijing in August included another long layover. This time I had several hours, during the day, for a San Francisco layover. I’ve been to this amazing city before, but I was still very excited to go back. There were a few things I really wanted to do this time and was able to do.

San Francisco Trolley

One of San Francisco’s famed attractions is the cable car system that takes people up and over the big hills that run through the city. I’ve seen them, but have never ridden them. Being carless this time, I thought it would be a good way to travel from points in the city while experiencing something iconic. The lines were ridiculously long. However, the ride was kind of fun hanging off the side.

Palace of Fine Arts

Recovering from the massive 1906 earthquake and fire, San Francisco was looking for ways to draw people back to the city. So, the city decided to host the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition. Almost all of the fair has been torn down over the century since them except for a few pieces including the Palace of Fine Arts.

This neo-classical park is reminiscent of Greek garden architecture seen in romanticized movies. It is grand and ornate. With a large pond in front offering lovely reflections and beautiful landscaping, this is a popular place for a stroll. There is an exhibit hall behind the massive arcades that houses rotating exhibits and experiences.

Ghirardelli

Every time I find myself in San Francisco or nearby, I make a point to visit a Ghirardelli’s chocolate shop. I go for the delectable hot fudge sundaes. They are amazing! This chocolate is one of America’s finer confections. It is what I use in my special cookies. Based in San Francisco, a visit to Ghirardelli Square for some ice cream or other chocolatey treat is a part of the Bay Area experience.

My San Francisco layover included to other adventures including a visit to a national park and a Frank Lloyd Wright building. More about those adventures coming soon!
