Sun YatSen and Chiang KaiShek Memorial Halls

Not far from Taipei 101, the Sun YatSen Memorial Hall stands as a testament to the influence of one man for so much change. Sun YatSen is respected in Taiwan and on the mainland. He is the father of modern China. Unfortunately, he died before his vision could be fully realized and implemented.

When I visited Nanjing seven years ago, I visited his tomb. When I explored Guangzhou, I found his memorial hall there. In Beijing, at Xiangshan (Fragrant Hills Park), I learned about his wife and how he was honored at his death.

Sun YatSen Memorial Hall

Taipei’s Sun YatSen Memorial Hall shares a glimpse into how he is honored with the grand statue sitting in the lobby looking out. On the mezzanine levels, large reliefs tell his story. Guards stand to protect his hallowed hall and ceremoniously change every hour.

The Building is mainly a concert hall. Art galleries also fill some of the spaces. Two exhibit halls tell his story. The gardens around the building are calming and lovely. I spent a few minutes sitting and reading in the park near the pond. I observed the bats as dusk crept in. I watched a turtle defend its turf from an encroaching bird. Overall, I feel inspired by this man that gains respect from two opposing sides to this day.

Chiang KaiShek Memorial Hall

Another very important figure in modern Chinese and Taiwan history is Chiang KaiShek. He succeeded Sun YatSen as President of the Republic of China. He led the nation through the War Against Japanese Aggression, and he led his people in the fight against Mao Zedong and the communists. He fled further and further south until they made it across the Straight to Taiwan. Chiang KaiShek is also the one who continued the war against the Mainland through propaganda and more during the rest of his life.

One of the most recognizable structures in Taipei is the building built to honor Chiang KaiShek. It is a large blue and white hall built in Chinese style. Lovely gardens surround the building. The stunning national theater buildings flank the entrance to the park and plaza. Facing out over this large public space sits a large statue of the former president. Like his predecessor, guards stand watch inside the hall in honor and respect to him and his legacy.
