Join Kevin from Adventure Patches for three Culture Classes over three weeks to learn about the Chinese New Year! Each week, students will learn something different about this important holiday, called Spring Festival in China.
This Adventure Patches Culture Class is broken into three 40-minute segments, held individually over three weeks, which is the length of the traditional Spring Festival season. For each class, there is a worksheet for students to print to use for an activity during the class (see bottom of this post).
Schedule
- Part 1 – Feb. 12, 2021 (the first day of Spring Festival): Students learn what the Chinese New Year is, how people prepare for it, and the Chinese zodiac. I’ll tell the story of “The Great Race,” a traditional Chinese myth that explains the order of the years in the Chinese zodiac.
- Part 2 – Feb. 19, 2021: Students learn how people celebrate the Chinese New Year including decorations, food, and more. I’ll tell the story of “The Nian Monster,” a Chinese folktale that explains many of the traditions involved in the holiday. Additionally, we’ll discuss the use of homophones in Chinese and how some apply to holiday celebrations.
- Part 3 – Feb. 26, 2021 (Lantern Festival): Students learn about Lantern Festival, the traditional last day of the New Year’s festivities, and how people celebrate with riddles. I’ll also connect Chinese New Year to Utah by teaching about the historic Chinese community in Salt Lake City and how they celebrated the holiday.
How to Participate
The classes will be held originally over Zoom at 2 p.m. Following the Zoom classes, the recordings of the classes will be broadcast live on the Adventure Patches by Kevin Earl Facebook page (https://fb.me/e/19lrgoy7w). During the broadcast, Kevin will be available to continue the discussion with those watching on Facebook. They will also be available to view afterward on the Adventure Patches Facebook page.
